Clay and mudstone
Under much of Warrington is heavy clay over soft mudstone. Clay holds water and moves as it wets and dries, so rain does not soak away and slabs can crack if the ground under them is not right.
We dig out to a proper formation (the firm, level ground a slab sits on), stabilise the soft spots, and compact the sub-base in thin layers. Where water cannot soak away, the drainage goes to attenuation tanks instead of a soakaway.
