Groundworks and driveways in Southport
Southport is home. Our yard is on 187 Upper Aughton Road, so most Southport jobs are a few minutes away. Driveways, patios, drainage and groundworks, from Birkdale to Marshside.

What we do in Southport
Most of our Southport work is for homeowners. We also do the groundworks for local builders.
- Driveways
Resin, tarmac, block paving, imprinted concrete and gravel drives, dug out and built up properly for the sandy ground.
- Patios
Porcelain and Indian sandstone, with falls set so the water runs away from the house.
- Dropped kerbs
So you can drive onto your new drive. We are NRSWA accredited to work on the pavement.
- Blocked drains
Jetted and cleared, with a 24 hour emergency line.
- Septic tanks and treatment plants
For the farms and villages round Southport that are not on the mains sewer.
- Extension foundations
Footings, drainage and the floor slab, ready for your builder.
Building on Southport sand
Birkdale, Ainsdale and Hillside sit on soft sand left by the sea, and the water table is high. A driveway laid straight on top of that sinks and ruts within a few years.
So we dig down to firm ground, lay a membrane to stop the stone sinking into the sand, and build up the sub-base (the compacted stone layer under the surface) in thin layers, each one rolled flat before the next goes on. It is the part you never see, and the part that decides how long the drive lasts.
Conservation areas
Parts of Southport, including Lord Street, Hesketh Park and Birkdale Park, are conservation areas. A new front driveway, wall or gateway there can need planning permission, and the council will want it to suit the street.
Check with Sefton Council before you start. We can work to the materials, edges and falls that are already there rather than ripping everything out.
A Southport job
78 m² porcelain driveway, Birkdale
A tired tarmac driveway lifted and taken away, the ground dug back to firm sand, and large format porcelain laid on a mortar bed. The falls run the rainwater into a drain at the threshold and on to a new soakaway, a pit that lets water soak back into the ground.
Around Southport
Birkdale, Ainsdale, Hillside, Marshside, Formby, Scarisbrick, Halsall, Banks, Hesketh Bank and Tarleton. Many of the villages and farms are not on the mains sewer, so we install and repair a lot of septic tanks and treatment plants out there.
