What we do in Wigan

Peat and wet ground round Skelmersdale

Around Skelmersdale and the old mosslands, a lot of the ground is peat: soft, wet, and full of water most of the year. Dig a hole for a septic tank or treatment plant and it fills with water as you go.

An empty tank sat in wet ground wants to float, the same way an empty boat does. So we set it in a concrete surround that holds it down, following the maker's instructions for wet ground. Done wrong, the tank lifts and cracks the pipes.

Off the mains sewer

Plenty of farms and houses between Wigan, Parbold and Skelmersdale drain to a septic tank. Many of those tanks are old and empty into a ditch or stream, which the General Binding Rules (the Environment Agency's rules for small sewage systems) no longer allow.

The usual fix is a new treatment plant, or a new drainage field so the tank empties into the ground instead. We do the percolation test (a test of how fast water soaks into your ground) to work out which.
